Found, Around My Desk

Found, Around My Desk
This blog was inspired by a Twitter friend. (Thanks Jen Bee!) The day before yesterday she posted a picture on Twitter showing a pile of papers with a ruler next to it, entitled “Found, around my desk.”

First, I was amused. It’s a whimsical photo. And very artistic. Then I wondered: would I do that? I mean, let Tweeps see my desk? In my office—inside my home? As I thought about it, over the course of the day, I realized that in many respects you—my writing Bleeps (blog peeps) and Tweeps—are like co-workers, becoming friends!

Writing is so solitary that aside from MEH (My Engineer Husband), my kids, Abby the dog, and the occasional IRL friend who I drag into my office to show something to, no one ever sees where I work.

So, today, co-workers and friends, here’s the tour of my corner of the world: my desk (shown above; sorry, it's a little messy but it's my work area...), where I spend 6 to 8 to sometimes-10 hours a day. Where I blog, tweet, and write.

And here's a the view I most often look out to.

The view out my other window

Now, here’s an invitation to you other solo co-worker writers out there: I’d love to see where you work—please post photos of your desk and the view out your window!

Cheers,

Julia

You are a blogging MACHINE, Julia. Love the view of your desk, but there is no WAY I'd send a pic of mine right now ... really can't SEE it! Yours at least has some semblance of order. Mine ... not so much.

Haha -- yeah, about the blogging...a contract fell through so I'm a little at loose ends right now...
And don't worry....my desk may look like it has semblance of order, but my HOUSE??? Not so much!

I love it! Desks should look like that. Those tidy, orderly ones are so un-lived in and a bit spooky (same for homes in general). Bring on the mess, the clutter, and the mugs and mugs of tea. :D

Awwww, thanks! You're the real star of this blog -- thanks for the motivation and idea! I agree on the clutter; but need to disagree on the tea, for me, it's coffee all the way! :)

What a neat idea. My desk is very organized with books, to-do lists, and sticky notes of random thoughts. My view on the other hand isn't so great (it faces on of the fraternities on campus). Have a good weekend!

A finely written description can be as visual as a photo! Not sure how to post a photo in this comment section so I have written about the things around my desk instead:

I finally have a room of my own and have worn a path from the old red couch to my desk in its perpetual state of wordy chaos, to the books misaligned on the shelves behind me, bindings akimbo, shifting to and fro to get the very best view of the mountains; to the window seat and the little flowered ottoman and yes, when the weather’s fine – which isn’t today – down the creaking stairs and over the snorting pug on the landing and through the Mexican room with its marigold walls and its sand table and the creased Rivera print and out onto back porch and the wheezy old swing with a handful of words at my fingertips…

Love the view! My desk currently has my lunch (yes, trying to catch up on blogs while eating), notes, GOOD POEMS by Garrison Keillor, various crayon creations from my kids, computer, and piles o' STUFF...everywhere. Nope. Not taking a picture. But thanks for sharing yours.

Creativechaos -- so interesting that your desk is so organized, but you have "chaos" in your blog name! It sounds heavenly to have things so organized and easy to find! As for the view, maybe if mine weren't so distracting I'd get more done! Thanks so much for the comment and dropping by!

Cathy -- love the description! I can so picture it in my mind's eye (I wonder how close I am!?)...it's so good! I love the snorting pug... and the marigold walls. And I am soooo envious that you have a handful of words at your fingertips. Mine are *never* that close! Thanks!!

Amanda -- no pic, but happy to hear a description! I often eat lunch (and breakfast!) at my desk, too, but today just a quick bread & honey with coffee -- now I've added a purple Fiestaware plate leftover from that! Love the crayon creations addition since my kids have moved beyond that stage.... Thanks for coming by, have a great weekend!

I love this idea! You've inspired me to do the same. I'll have to photograph both my desks - my home station where I blog and write, and my "day job" desk. Thanks!

My desk is usually a mess--papers, writing books, pens--yuck. You have window and that's awesome. I stare at a wall. Not very joyous at all. Boring. I should at least put up a picture or some words of encouragement or something--heck, I think I'll do that.

What I wouldn't give for a den/office. My desk is in my bedroom opposite the window and so I find myself typing in bed--*gasp* I know. Not good. But it's so comfy.

Good post.

I dunno. Your desk looks awfully tidy to me. If a cat can't send it flying with one wayward whisker, you're organized. My view is of a tree with chickadees. And a house fifteen feet away.

Julia Munroe Martin said...

Leah -- can't wait to see *your* desks!! I'll be by to visit when you post the photos!

Angela --Thanks so much for coming by to visit (my site and my desk!). I feel fortunate (and now a little guilty) to have a window and a great view. But I also know what you mean about the comfy bed; the luxury of the laptop is that I can also instead work on the couch! Nice to meet you! p.s. let me know what picture you post above your desk, I'll be curious to hear!

Murr -- Thanks for visiting (my site and my desk)!! I suppose tidy is all relative and related to whether or not I can find anything. That's the real problem....right now my desk (and my mind) are not as tidy as usual, and it's getting in the way of productivity! The tree full of chickadees sounds lovely; sometimes I can see cardinals in that spruce. Hope to see you again soon!

Any which way I look, I see toys. Seas of toys is my view.

I like yours better. :)

Julia Munroe Martin said...

Be careful what you wish for.... I like your view better, no question. Boy do I miss that sea of toys! :)

LOL! I loved MEH. I've got one of those too.

I've got a photo that shows both my desk and the view from my window in summer time. Will post it somewhere (maybe figure out how they do that Twitter pic thing) and report back.

Thanks for the comment! Can't wait to see your desk on Twitter! (Did you check out Jen Bee's? She posted on her blog, too cool!) Glad you have a MEH too -- they're the best! Good to meet you, love your site!

fearofwriting said...

Yes! I saw Jen Bee's desk. Very cool. And I saw that she used Twitpic for the view from her window. It looks easy. Can't wait to put my desk up on Twitpic tomorrow.

I have a friend who I think might like this invitation and will want to share her desk pic too.

Julia, I'm so glad to have finally found you. I love your blog and I love this post. I tried to post a picture, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Here's a link to a blog post with a picture of my desk, though. http://wp.me/pM9q6-ty Disclaimer: The desk was new in the photo. It's never been than clean again. Right now my mouse lies on a pile of papers. :)

I'm so glad you found me, too. (And I'm glad blogger is working again!) So glad to see your desk, too. I love having a glimpse into other writers' lives; it's nice to think of where we all sit and write and think, all day!
Hope to see you again soon, Julia

Hi Julia, since now I'm finished with work ;) I decided to pay your blog a visit too. Very nice!
You asked for pictures of my desk, well here it is: http://mariondriessen.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/cimg3382.jpg.
As for the view from my window, there's a story behind it. And not a nice one. You can see the current view at the end of the post: http://drieskewrites.wordpress.com/2011/02/17/they-are-killing-my-trees/
Talk to you soon :)

Julia Munroe Martin said...

Hi Marion, I absolutely love your desk. Beautiful! I really like the room, too -- we have sloping ceilings in our house and it's so cozy! Thanks for coming by; see you soon!

OK, I figured out Twitpic and it was super-easy. I'm looking forward to using it for other things, so thanks for the nudge to finally do it.

Here are my pics:

Thanks for showing us your desk and inviting us to show ours. This has been fun!

I love your desk and room -- so nice! But the view is amazing! And you and YEH (YOUR Engineer Husband) must be devoted to your lawn, it's lush! This has been fun, and judging from the volume of comments, a big hit. This summer, I think I'll post pics of my garden as we go along! -- Julia
p.s. I know -- I've only used twitpic a couple of times, but it is super easy, right?

Perry Block said...

Well, Julia, let's just say I'm not the neatest person on the planet! Though this is not my actual workspace, and yes, I'm engaging in a bit of hyperbole, this is an approximation.

Kind of a close approximation.

Hey, it works for me!

Perry, haha, LOVE the pic! I think some nice curtains might help, but otherwise it (kinda) keeps the rain out, right? Thanks for a good laugh this morning! Hope you'll be back!

I love seeing other writers' spaces...it's so fascinating to see where we all create. My desk goes through phases of extreme tidiness to extreme chaos, kinda like a pendulum swinging. I think I work best when my work area is organized, but then I start working, and getting so into the writing, that the organization falls to the side...so back and forth I go!

Julia Munroe Martin said...

That's so interesting about your cycles of organization/disorganization--I'm the exact same way. When I'm on a big project, I get so hyper-focused that when I finally come up for air, I realize that every surface of every desk and table is covered. It's crazy but I can tell how hard I'm working by how tidy the house is!

I love sharing my desk space with folks! (Am I weird?)

http://tamiveldura.deviantart.com/gallery/23663664#/d30arvz

I don't have the view out a sliding glass door anymore since I've moved, but now I get to see out the balcony of my new place, which is almost as good!

Julia Munroe Martin said...

Welcome Tami! Are you kidding? I don't think you're weird at all for sharing your desk space -- of course I did it too! :) I love your desk! It's very cool! And I am especially impressed with the amazing annotation. Very very cool! What app did you use for the callouts? Thanks for dropping by, please come again!
